Essential oils work differently than any other natural substance on earth. Because humans and plants evolved together we have similarities and a unique relationship – plants were not only humankind’s first food but also our first medicines.
Unique features of essential oils: pass through the skin and cell membranes, are circulated/diffused through the body within 30 minutes, go directly to the brain through the olfactory bulb, affect our feelings and our thoughts as smell is our most emotional sense, perform multiple functions due to their structural complexity.
Essential oils are generally extracted by distillation – a concentrated liquid containing volatile aroma compounds from plants.
There are numerous references to essential oils in the Bible. Some precious oils, such as frankincense, myrrh, galbanum, rosemary, hyssop, cassia, cinnamon and spikenard were used for anointing and healing of the sick. The three wise men (magi) brought gold, frankincense and myrrh to the Christ child. Clinical research shows that frankincense and myrrh are two of the most powerful immune-stimulating substances available, containing very high amounts of immune-stimulating properties. Perhaps the three wise men were wise in ways beyond our knowledge.
